What’s a niche hobby of yours that you feel more people should get into?

  1. Wood burning. seriously, it’s quite easy to have nice results when you begin, and you’re so intensely focused it empties your mind. It’s really peaceful after a stressful day.

  2. Roleplaying.

It’s a great creative outlet and you get to colloborate with other people which is fun

  3. Hunting. With all the boomers dying off, it’s not as popular as it once was, and that sucks.

  4. Hobbyist electronics and “maker” projects. It can definitely be challenging to get into (my background is engineering and without a technical background it’s certainly a steep learning curve). With that said, the reward is awesome. You can learn to build all kinds of really cool stuff, and troubleshooting anything around your house becomes a breeze. It’s also great because you can take it to any level that you want: you can buy a $20 arduino kit and do loads with just that, or you can go totally overboard like me and build a home lab with enough equipment that people think you’re a mad scientist when they visit. And anywhere in between lol

  5. It is admittedly a side thing to a less niche hobby of playing music. But I like to fix up busted musical instruments. My grandpa was a local guitar teacher and repairman. Also an engineer, including electronics. He taught me a lot about all that. I inherited his boxes of parts and tools.

I go around to used stores and look for stuff with good bones, but in bad shape. Sometimes buy completely broken ones real cheap if they have standard type parts to part out. Mostly guitars and basses, but Ive refurbished mandolins, banjos, ukes, accordions, pedal steel, violin family stuff, etc. I have fixed some amplifiers and pedals, but I dont like to. Ill mod them for friends if they ask but I feel more emotionally attached to instruments for whatever reason.

  6. I’m in a medieval living history society that includes martial activities like armored combat, fencing, archery, and thrown weapons. That being said there’s a lot of people doing calligraphy, tailoring, cooking, etc. It’s a lot of fun and there’s usually an event or two within driving distance most weekends

  7. Bouldering

It’s excellent sport. It trains your whole body, strength and flexibility. Interesting, does not become monotonous, have to think and figure out the routes. Also does not require too much special equipment, only shoes, chalk and wall to climb.

  8. I started collecting toy cars again and I couldn’t be happier. Plus there is r/hotwheels and the people on there are super nice and welcoming.
