You see a lot of BRAND NEW sofas, beds and wardrobes on marketplace advertised for free or for insanely cheap prices.

It’s obviously a scam, but I can’t see how the scam works. Does anyone have any experience of following through with responding to these ads?

I am not talking about people genuinely selling second hand goods, but people moving on brand new items.

EDIT – edited to re-emphasise.

  1. It’s a pain to try and dispose of big furniture. Do might as well give ir away to people who can collect.

It would cost me money to get rid of a sofa because I don’t have a car, and my non existent car isn’t registered with the tip.

  2. Pain in arse to throw away or transport myself to a new owner. I rather give it away dirt cheap and someone else can collect it. I have a nice big marble coffee table in my garage. Heavy fucker but quality table I don’t want. No one seems to be asking me about it.

  3. Sadly, if there is an attractive woman on, or by, the furniture it is usually an advert for prostitution.

  4. I messaged one about a bed, it wasn’t super super cheap but it was a hell of a lot cheaper than it should be. They said I could pay cash on delivery but I had to transfer over £30 for the delivery fee. I felt it was dodgy and never got back to them. It could be that these items don’t exist and they’re just after the £30.

  5. I’ve noticed a lot of these in my area too. They all seem brand new, the photos appear to be in showrooms and they’re all listed as free. The accounts are new and while the location is near me, the description usually talks about London. It seems dodgy to me. There appears to be dozens, if not hundreds of them. It’s irritating to trawl through them when I am looking for a second hand sofa.

  6. They use the item to open conversation, then they will answer your questions till they can do you a favour, example, delivery charge or deposit to hold etc….they will adapt to everyone differently, waiting for an opportunity.

Edit: its robbery in broad daylight and pretty easy to catch them if the authorities wanted to.

  7. They will want cash up front, delivery fee or just use the cheap/free to lure people in attracted by the price then give the real cost after.
