So, I’m kinda confused right now.

I have this habit that when greeting people, instead of normal greetings like good morning I just bow my head and give a little smile. There’s a party going right now, so I did it to greet people, like usual, but somebody teased me saying “arigatou”, implying I’m a japanese person. Well, now I don’t know if that was a stupid joke or something I should worry myself about.

Bowing my head, in a western country that I’m a native of, is considered weird or rude? Should I start using another type of greeting like waving my hand or actually just saying hello? It’s such a habit for me though…

  1. It’s not super normal, so it’s an easy target for other people to comment on. It won’t do you any favors to keep doing it. Just my my opinion.

  2. It’s not weird or rude, but it’s very formal, respectful and distant. More so than a handshake imo. It reads as “out of place” in an informal gathering.
