If you make eye contact you owe them at least a nod.
How many people are we talking about?
You don’t have to actually say hi, a quick wave or head nod is plenty most of the time. Greeting people by name is a good way to start building a stronger friendship though.
I have the principle of always being the first to say “Hi”. It makes you more comfortable because you are the one framing the situation and reduces anxiety by eliminating part of the uncertainty.
I usually say hi or hello to everyone i walk past because i fell like it is a nice way to meet new people.
Historically, this has been a regional thing in the US. People in small towns and/or the South have done it routunely. Urban coastal cities, not so much.
Just a quick hey good morning or hey how are you. Hey how are you is rhetoric though.
