I (26, F) last night I went to a bar by myself and I mostly just wanted to share that because it is very unorthodox for me. I am trying to sharpen my social skills.

I went alone, ordered one drink, sat at the bar and played videogames on my Switch. I didn’t want to get “too” drunk so I stopped after feeling buzzed from one drink. I went to the bathroom after my drink, sat on the couch and continued to play video games.

It was a good time. I didn’t talk to anyone as the thought of talking to strangers feels overwhelming.

  1. Props for going out of your comfort zone. With time, you’ll probably gather the courage to talk to strangers too, if that’s smth you want

  2. People won’t interrupt you whilst playing unless they would be a fan of the same game that you were playing. It’s a step in the right direction for sure, but trying to be more social means having to step out of the comfort zone. Luckily I’m already married (to my best friend as well) and I don’t have to do much socializing, yet I dread having to put myself out there so I can feel you. I met her through online dating apps as well, got pretty lucky after no success for being close to 4 years.

If anyone approaches you at the bar with genuine interest, might be worth it to chat it up for a bit. If I were single and I’d saw a girl playing Stardew Valley, Smash, Borderlands or any other games alone at a bar, I’d probably say hi and ask you about which is your favorite character and why, to get a conversation going. You can usually tell from a person’s personality if you’re going to like them or not after a few minutes of chatting.

If you ever feel insecure about any stranger approaching you, don’t force yourself to be social because you could potentially put yourself at risk of having to deal with an immature creep or worse… But what you did was pretty good, wish I had the balls to do that when I was single (although, it did work out just great for me in the end).

Keep it up OP, things never change if you always do the same thing every day.

  3. Great for going out to socialize. Don’t ever play on your switch while doing so tho. Very weird even tho understandable to some degree
