I (22M) have always had fantasies of being dominant as long as I can remember, and still to this day when I fantasize about having sex with my girlfriend I always fantasize about dominating her. However, when I actually have sex with her, I HATE dominating her and I much rather she dominates me. The thing that confuses me though is that I never fantasize about being dominated when I am alone. What could be the cause of this massive difference between my fantasies and my desires in real life?
Edit: I should add that this has created a bit of a conundrum because my gf doesn’t like being dominant at all and really wants to be dominated in bed. We have met in the middle for now by just having vanilla sex which we both enjoy.

Either way, you’re taking on a role. Playing a part. Maybe you could practice a bit and you could both learn to play each.
All good sex involves acting. If you only do what turns you on, you might as well have sex with yourself.
