Me personally i barely drink all year but at Christmas I like to have some alcohol.

This year I want to try some scotch whisky and wondered which is best from your experience..

  1. Bourbon is the traditional American liquor, not Scotch, FYI. I was never a huge fan of Scotch, but I usually kept a bottle of Monkey Shoulder on the shelf for the rare occasion I wanted some. I feel like it’s a decent, widely-available entry-level blended Scotch.

r/whiskey or r/scotch would probably be a better place to ask.

  2. Assuming you’re new or relatively new to scotch, I’d recommend something that isn’t heavily peaty. Some scotch will taste like you’re drinking a campfire, some are lightly smoky, and the rest are in between.

That said, my recommendation for a first scotch or a daily sipper is Macallan 12yr. In my experience and preference it’s the perfect balance of flavor and price for a single malt. It’s also widely available, unlike some other recommendations I could make.

  3. My family drinks pretty liberally and the holidays are no exception. Typically beers and wines (my family makes a kickass kuhano vino – a Croatian mulled wine similar to glugg), but brandy and bourbon are always around too.

I never have liked scotch much, the peaty flavor doesn’t appeal to me

  4. I have a few drinks most weeks (mostly beer). I may drink a little more around major holidays. During the pandemic, I forced myself to start liking bourbon. Was never a fan of liquor. Right now, I have a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed and a bottle of Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The only scotch I’ve tried is Monkey Shoulder and it was pretty good.

  5. Generally not too much, maybe 3-4 drinks. I’m mostly a bourbon drinker, but do like a good scotch from time to time. My absolute favorite is Lagavulin 16 year, but it’s damn expensive. Highland Park 12 year is also excellent for less money. Although both of them are peated so if you don’t like the smokey flavor of peated scotch you won’t like either one.

  6. I drink spiced drinks over the holidays. Rarely straight liquor. Mulled cider, eggnog. Both have alcohol. Cinnamon hot toddy is another favorite.

  7. I read this as how much school at christmas and was like wait how are school and whiskey related lol

  8. I drink a lot, always. Christmas is no exception. I do enjoy Laphroaig 10 year. It’s like kissing a campfire 🔥

  9. I’m visiting family so whatever they provide, but when I’m by myself, a bourbon mint julep made with tea is quite nice

  10. I usually cut back alcohol consumption in the New Year just to gain a bit more balance. But during the holidays its like “well its the holidays”. Plus more family events which means more alcohol being consumed…

Favorite scotch is Lagavulin 16. I’ve got a couple in my case right now and I try to only drink that when its something worth celebrating.

  11. I’ve got a fresh bottle of Bullit Rye that I plan on putting a serious dent in, making Old Fashioneds. I’l alsol probably end up having a few fingers of Writer’s Tears Irish whiskey with my father-in-law.

The only bottles of scotch I have are Johnny Walker Red Label and Macallan 12 sherry oak cask.

The JW is honestly not great, Macallan is delightful.

  12. The only alcohol my immediate family typically indulges in is a sip of rum here and there when we’re making rum cakes.
