I have a new (to me) microwave but the cable is too short. It has a 13 amp 3 core 1.5mm^(2) moulded plug. My main worry is that there is a dirty big capacitor inside waiting to fry me if I go in with a screwdriver.

  2. Personally I think you already know the answer to your question, your not confident and so you should avoid doing such a task.

I would let someone who is competent / qualified to do such a task.

  3. Why don’t you just get an extension cable rather than mucking around inside of the microwave 👍

  4. I wouldn’t be opening the microwave personally – not unless you’re pretty confident with soldering etc.

I’d happily snip the plug off and go from there though.

There won’t be any dangerous capacitance on the plug side

  5. Just make sure you keep away from the capacitor or discharge it first. Failing that, I hope you have a will.

If you’re practical with tools and not a moron then yes it’s OK. Disconnect it and leave it for 30 minutes or so and it should’ve discharged any capacitors in it.

Only thing that may scupper plans for a quick easy change is if it’s soldered to the PSU board or uses a Molex connector. Soldered is easy to do but if it’s using a Molex connector then it becomes a pain in the arse trying to find the right one.
