Because I love reading about and watching POVs of rollercoasters, and this looks terrifying.

  1. It was good! I hate heights, but my friend really wanted to go on it and she asked if I’d try.

    The drop is VERY fast!

  2. I rode it once the last time I went to Alton Towers, 12 years ago.

I don’t remember screaming but when we got off the ride my throat was very sore 😂. Not bad for a 10 second ride.

  3. The build up is the worst bit. You’re slowly climbing up the hill lift, all the while the drop is in your line of sight for the majority of the time.

Then you slowly go around the horseshoe shape track before it briefly pauses to dangle you over the edge. I went on it after they’d been forbidden from playing the “don’t look down” audio from the ads but I imagine that messed with you a bit too.

The actual drop is fast…barely registered. All that build-up and it’s over with fairly quickly. It’s definitely not the Alton Towers ride I’d be willing to queue for hours for back in the days it was new.

  4. Not bad. Feel like it should do 2 circuits instead of one or just be a bit longer. It’s like a minute long with the climb and paused drop

  5. We were huge coaster fans. Travelled from the south coast specifically to go on Oblivion on it’s opening day.

Hugely disappointed. It’s so simple and over too quickly. ( The drop being the real part of the ride, the preamble of slowly trundling around the track was fairly boring to me ).

Far better rides in the UK are the Big One at Blackpool, Nemesis at Alton Towers, and although also a simple ride, I thought Stealth at Thorpe Park was exhilarating.

  6. It’s not very exciting unfortunately it’s just one drop, and you won’t find it scary or very thrilling if you’re used to rollercoaster.

  7. It’s basically a kiddie ride compared to Nemesis and Smiler. It’s not popular at all and I can see it going in the next few years.

  8. I would honestly say it’s not worth it. Practically every other coaster at any UK theme park is better imo. It’s over before you know (which I suppose can be no bad thing if it scares you)

  9. It’s really weak sauce… little kids could go on and be fine all day long

Smiler is the main thrill ride draw for Alton Towers.

  10. Lot of anticipation and before you know it it’s all over.
A familiar experience with us all I’m sure

  11. Yes, about 20 years ago. Was on a school trip chatting with friends, didn’t even realise what we were queueing up for… I don’t do heights.

Most exhilarating thing I never ever want to do again. I was so full of adrenaline I was shaking for hours.

  12. It’s not the best ride in the park, but I always do back-to-back-to-back smiler oblivion smiler oblivion 90% of the time i go.

  13. I went to Alton Towers a few months ago. Oblivion was alright when it first came out all those years ago but now it’s old news and it hasn’t aged well at all. Nemesis is still good which I seem to think is older and rides like thirteen and Rita aren’t exactly new but still better. Wickerman is a cool ‘runaway train’ style coaster (the second time that day we rode it the ending changed and it both excited us and freaked us out)

Smiler is without a doubt the best ride there, the name suits it’s perfectly. it assaults your senses and surprises you from the very moment you leave the station even on the third go that day.

  14. Actually cried on it. The force of the drop triggered something and gave me a moment of panic.

  15. Years ago. Was fun.

I rear-ended a car on the M6 on the way home which was more scary.

    Ride it and have fun!

  16. It was my first time at a amusement park/theme park, and I went on the front row of Oblivion with my Dad. It was phenomenal. That split second of hanging over that massive plunge flared up my vertigo so badly that I froze completely. Didn’t even have time to regret everything before we shot downward. Screamed myself hoarse that day, the adrenaline rush was absolutely fantastic though

  17. Thought the drop was amazing but the ride is so short that you can’t help but feel underwhelmed once it’s done.

Not exactly helped by the fact it’s pretty much next to the Smiler which is the polar opposite.

  18. It’s the rollercoaster that got me into rollercoasters. Imo it’s a really good test to see if that kinda stuff is for you. It’s one big, fast, steep drop with a lot of anticipation behind it, if you hate it then it’s fine it’s already over, if you like it then then now you know you can handle basically any pretty intense coaster. It’s not got all that much to it and I doubt already enthusiastic coaster fans will get much out of it, but I still get a kick out of riding it just cause it fully got me over my fear. Plus queue times are usually pretty short

  19. I remember my first time on Oblivion, didn’t stop talking about it to anyone who would listen! This is probably around 20 years ago though!! Great ride imo

  20. It’s the third fastest roller coaster in the UK and was the first to have a vertical drop. So yeah, it’s pretty thrilling.

But it is over very quickly – the whole ride time is just over a minute and most of that is getting the car to the top of the drop.

I can imagine why it would look terrifying from a POV video. It’s not really that “bad” though.

So yeah I reckon you should do it, but there’s better rides in the park too.

Last time I went to Alton Towers we were still there at closing time. The queue time for Oblivion said 5 minutes, which really meant 5 minutes to walk round the queueing area. We found a short cut from the exit back to the start so we went on it 5-10 times in a row before the park shut.

  21. I haven’t been to Alton Towers in years but loved it when I was 14, however I wish there was more to it than one drop.

  22. The pause and tilt right before the drop beats me up. The drop itself isn’t bad purely because it’s so quick. You get some vapour spray in your face at the bottom of the drop as well, as you enter the tunnel.

It’s the first “big one” that I tend to go on after leaving that initial entrance street. My AT order begins on spinball wizard(?) then oblivion then to the smiler.
