Some condoms are made with spermicides and anti-viral drugs specifically for combatting AIDS. So, yes, condoms are and can be VERY effective at curbing the spread in 1 on 1 encounters.
If you have the means, I highly suggest trying several different brands to find the one(s) that fit you best. While you’re at it, buy condom safe lubricant, as well. Everyone involved will thank you later.
Condoms are effective. But not 100% effective. They are near-100% effective, but not all the way.
One of the simple reasons for that is that the condom only goes down to the base, and if she is able to have all of you inside her, you are still going to have some skin-to-skin contact.
I’m not sure how available it is where you are, but there is a medication you can take called PreP which helps to lower the risk of contracting HIV.
Maybe ask your doctor if you could go on it, if you feel it’s necessary
