I have a friend who talks too much in conversations. They dominate and talk about themselves too much, tell long stories that are uninteresting, and don’t understand social cues about moving the conversation on or changing topic. If someone else moves onto a different topic, they will listen, nod, and then go right back to the previous topic.

I overheard someone like this when my neighbours were having an outside dinner party and realised these people are actually quite common. Short for publicly calling them out, or taking them aside and “having a word” what’s the best way to navigate this kind of social disaster in the moment, so that the hang-out is salvage-able and participants can continue with a normal conversation?

  1. Feelings and needs

“You seem to be quite upset about what you’re talking about, is there any need of yours that is not being met? Lets talk about that and about how you feel.”
