Is there truly anything wrong with just flat-out saying that I’m not interested, even if it’s someone I’m decent friends with and don’t have other plans?

  1. No there’s nothing wrong with it. If it’s not something you’re up for, then that’s a perfectly valid reason.

  2. This is a fine thing to say! Although, if you’re worried about hurting their feelings, give them a (kind!) reason why.

For example: Your friend asks you to go to a bar, and you don’t want to. Saying just “Not interested” can come off a bit cold, but saying “Oh sorry I’m just not really a bar guy” or “I’d rather just get some rest after (work, school, whatever) that night”

This makes it feel like there’s a reason you can’t rather than you just don’t want to hang out with them! (which may not be the case, but people can feel this way)

Remember, if there’s an easy, kinder thing to say, always make an effort to say it!
