I’ve learned to stop expecting and to be grateful for what I receive. Well, we both expect fidelity. If I feel neglected I talk to her. If she feels neglected she talks to me. This comes from years of counseling.
Marriage is a lot like giving without conditions. I give and do not expect her to give back. That doesn’t mean I’m not sometimes disappointed or surprised. But in general it all evens out.
Someone I can trust with my secrets, my feelings, and someone to have sex with.
If she does chores or cooks, it’s a bonus.
My expectations are that she will remain the same person (generally speaking) as she was before the marriage. I also expect her give the same effort that I give – in other words, marriages take work and they are not always easy, it’s during those times when you have to work at it. I expect her to work, just like I will work.
