As the header / questions suggests, has anyone else noticed a pretty steep decline in the quality of driving across the UK in just general bad driving / etiquette, phones while driving poor decision making when on roundabouts and pulling out of junctions etc?, Not to mention with it being dark quite early and people still aren’t driving with their headlights on, it’s either day runners, fog lights or one headlight busted,

I’ve only been out for 3 hours this evening (past 6pm) and counted 32 cars with either just day runners / fogs on (no headlights) full beams on constantly, or one headlights busted

Has this been since the 2 year lock down (on and off) that people have just forgotten the basics of driving? it’s pretty worrying.

  1. Everything is expensive, wages won’t keep up, repairs are being put off, I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that.

  2. I said this the other day. It seems to have been since lockdown was lifted. It’s like people forgot how to drive

  3. The standard of driving in the UK has always been terrible. The amount of aggression, bad lane discipline and poor speed management is astounding at times.

Can’t say I’ve noticed a change post covid however

  4. People trying to being polite/kind by deciding to change ‘right of way’ rules is so dangerous. Let’s just stick to the rules

  5. Certainly noticed more people driving without their lights on, and cars with lightbulbs out.

I know some people are finding it hard due to costs etc, but that is no excuse for driving without working lights,. You can afford fuel, you can afford a crucial thing like a new head lights. They are not expensive, and you can even get people at Halfords to fit them for you.

They are deffo cheaper than having an accident and somebody getting hurt, possibly killed.

  6. The phones while driving thing is getting absolutely abysmal. Just on my way home from work earlier I noticed a woman in a black Benz on her phone behind me (constantly looking down at her lap and a slightly lit up face) she proceeded to do this at every red light we stopped at. Worst part is, when they turned green, she would hold traffic up for a few seconds by not pulling off, clearly too distracted

  7. I did a 180ish mile journey to visit my parents in December and was amazed at how many broken down vehicles I saw at the side of the road, bonnets up or tyre blow out etc. Never seen so many in all the years I’ve made the journey. I think people just aren’t (able to afford to keep) maintaining their cars as they once did.

  8. The broken headlight thing is down to lack of enforcement. 20 years ago, you wouldn’t last a single journey with a bulb out without getting pulled over by the rozzers. One night in the early 90’s I got stopped 3 times between Sheffield and Huddersfield, a journey of 45 mins, because I had a back light out. No ticket, just a friendly reminder to get it fixed. You dare not drive with a car that had a visual defect because you would at best be inconvenienced by the police, now that fear is gone.

  9. It’s the full beams which pisses me off. Absolutely shameless ignorance. It’s so dangerous.

I agree with you about general driving standards too.

When I want a new car I’m just going to stick a dash cam in mine and drive around at 5pm, someone will wipe me out on a roundabout in the first ten minutes. It’s appalling.
