Hi I’m 18 yo and wondering if it would be beneficial to start kegels at this age. (Like with those balls on the string). My partners already say they can feel me contract when I’m orgasming, but I would still like to work out those muscles to keep them in shape.

I know it’s recommended after having children so wondering if I start now, if it will interfere with the effectiveness later on or if there’s anything else I should worry about.

  1. Kegels are just muscles, not magic, start exercising if you are thinking about it.

Having it after children only is like only saying I will start exercising when I get fat. The injury has happened and Kegels are physio for it.

Having strong Kegels young will mean you are usually in better shape the older you get.

  2. I’ve been warned by pelvic physical therapists to not focus on Kegels because they can lead to an overly tight pelvic floor and cause issues later, like vaginismus, difficult birth, and pf weakness. The muscle tone you already have is probably just fine! I was also told that if you do do Kegels to fully relax between contractions and pair it with doing deep lunges and squats. Letting those muscles stretch nice and long. Theres a sweet spot between being overly tight and too relaxed.

  3. If your partner says that he likes the way you feel when you have orgasms, you already have enough muscle *strength*.

But you may have a lot of fun (and, ahem, HE may have a lot of fun) getting muscle *control*.

Because in theory it’s several muscles that you can control somewhat individually, for pretty interesting effects.

There is a difference between what you can do with your muscles because you have an orgasm and what you can deliberately and consciously do because you have decided that you want to do it.

The balls-on-string things are for muscle strength.

If you want to figure out muscle control, you need a smaller gadget that is much heavier and sort of peanut-shaped.

(Some balls on a string are also peanut shaped, but those balls are larger. Significantly so.)

  4. There’s no certain age to start kegels. I’ve done kegels since before my teens. Do your own research, but kegels have a long and well-documented history. I feel there are no drawbacks as long as you’re taking an equal amount of time after doing kegels to relax and actively stretch your pelvic floor muscles.
