Kind of nervous because it’s my first managerial role. I am a firm believer that I don’t know what I don’t know. I would really appreciate any advice or anecdotes that any manager should be mindful of. Thank you in advance!

  2. If the ship is sailing, there I no need to exert influence or move the goal posts. We are achieving the primary objective. The issue with many middle managers is, because they have nothing to do, they want to “mix it up” or push beyond. When in truth, upper management only need to see that the ship is sailing. So these exercises achieve nothing other than inflating own sense of self.

  3. From my experience, ensure your team has the knowledge and tools to able to do their jobs and trust your team to do so. Be there to support them when necessary.

    I’ve seen too many managers come in, try to rock the boat with so many unnecessary changes just to show that “they’re the boss”, and the team loses all motivation and interest and the performances freefalls.

  4. Do your best to ensure that the employees on your team have a reasonable workload. Don’t drive them too hard. Also, try to shield them from the abuse that comes from higher up. Dont pass it down to them.

    Studies (and also common sense) show that stressed out employees who are overworked are often less productive.
