You are doing what everyone does. Noone is close to anyone unless they are hanging out with them outside of work frequently and talking on a good level.
i do the same thing. plus when anyone ever asks me i lie so it’s not like they would actually be getting closer to me idk. i actually would like to be friends w a couple of my coworkers but i mean i can’t even tell the truth about how my day is. anywayyy i don’t think you’re a hypocrite i think you’re just doing as everyone else does. half the time i ask ppl how they are they ignore me but i feel like i have to ask or they’ll think i’m a dick
I used to feel the same way or I would feel frustrated when I was on the other end of this. Now I have just accepted these conversations as social lubricant. Things we do out of civility so as to not appear rude or so silences don’t feel awkward
Simple, don’t ask since you know you don’t care. Participating in pleasantries is definitely not needed to socialize.
That is a crucial part of maintaining the social order. No need to feel like you’re being manipulative or “fake”. It’s just part of the world we live in.
So don’t ask how their day. Just say good morning or whatever.
