I’ve only ever had one serious relationship in my life which lasted six months like a decade ago, so I often can’t relate to numerous love songs that I hear. It’s like the lyrics of the songs are about experiences that I’ve never had.

How come love songs and love stories depicted in movies and tv-shows aren’t about experiences that I can relate to, like women friend-zoning a guy after a significant emotional and time investment on his part, or women ghosting a guy and never talking to him again despite how much rapport had been built between them, or women using deception to avoid rejecting someone directly?

Why do I feel really shitty and depressed when I hear love songs?

  1. Because they’re fantasy. Made up. If most people’s love lives were just like in the media, the media wouldn’t be so popular. Because you’d be living in it lol

  2. Well, the ghosting story idea isn’t a romantic movie or love song. You can’t relate because, as you’ve stated you’ve not had significant romantic relationships. Ruby Sparks or 500 Days of Summer might have protagonists you can identify with, though.
