“It starts with coming in blank.

Not having any preconceived ideas, being open, and really listening. Listening and not thinking about what you’re going to say next or what your opinion is.

Basically, being a recorder.

Just hearing what comes in… processing that information and trying \[your\] best to do that without any of the beliefs that we might have to impact what that is…

\[The\] goal is not to form an opinion, it’s to understand.”

Rick Rubin has produced some of the greatest of all time: Run DMC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Jay Z, Johnny Cash… The list is nuts. He touches upon some really important aspects of listening.

**This is what I took away:**

* Listen to understand
* Suspend your own beliefs temporarily
* Keep an open mind and listen without judgment
* Don’t just keep opinions to yourself, remove them altogether

This is how Rick is able to understand — *truly understand* \– the artistic direction legendary artists are working towards and creating beautiful music.

Every human can benefit from better listening skills.
