I was having a chat with a young mother; she was talking about how hard it is to go shopping with young kids in tow.

I distinctly remember being left in some sort of supervised play area while my mum was shopping when I was a kid

  1. I remember our sainsburys had one and I distinctly remember watching Hanna-barberas the impossibles/captain caveman in ikeas childrens cinema.

  2. Back in the day? We used one about 10 – 12 years ago. It did close right when my daughter (now 16) grew out of it.

  3. The Asda in my hometown did. I was always gutted that my mom wouldn’t let us go.

  4. Yup, vividly, it’s where I first played Playstation, I remember Safeways having them, I believe.

  5. I dont remember supermarkets having one. But I remember how exciting going to the IKEA one was. And I also remember another furniture store having one which had a couple of SNES’s. I didn’t even get past Green Hill Zone before my parents came to collect me.

  6. Not sure about a crèche, but back when I was a baby in the 1960s we were left outside the shops in our prams.

I assume I wasn’t swapped for another baby in that time.

  7. I used to use the IKEA one, but I’ve never known it anywhere else (as child or parent).

  8. Woolworths had one. It was brilliant, it was over two floors and you could look out the window to the high street. I’m sure our parents were supposed to stay in the store but they definitely went out & got everything done!

  9. The big Asda near Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh used to have one. Alas, it was before I had children.

  10. I don’t recall any at supermarkets around here but local shopping centre had one

  11. Yep. There was one in the Safeway we shopped at but my Mum didn’t like the idea so we never went in there.

  12. Yes, I do. You just bought back a forgotten memory.
I can’t remember which supermarket it was, but I distinctly remember the crèche area layout and the few times we went there.

The 90s was just a better time for kids. Toys in cereal/crisps/yogurts, playing outside, supermarket creches, Saturday morning tv. I loved growing up in the 90s, we had some technology, but not enough for it to take over.

  13. I did see that my local Safeway’s had a crèche but as per usual a few people abused the facility by dropping their children off then going into town, they weren’t supposed to leave the store, by the time I had a child of my own the crèche was long gone.

  14. I don’t recall supermarkets, but I think British Home Stores (or somewhere like that) in Watford perhaps had one? I know as a slightly older kid (8 or 9 ?) I was left there playing with Lego once…

  15. Omg yes I remember my local Tesco having one! One with slides and soft play? Whenever I mention it to someone they have no idea what I’m talking about

  16. This was the highlight of the Safeways trip, they had a Megadrive with Aladdin and Sonic Spinball

  17. I was just talking about this yesterday!

Our local Safeways had a crèche and it was where I played my first video game. It was the early/mid 90s so I can’t have been very old but I vividly remember it having a Sega Mega Drive with Sonic the Hedgehog and I loved it. We didn’t have any games consoles at home so I’d make a beeline for it when I arrived and played it for what felt like hours until I got kicked off by the crèche staff or my mum came to pick me up. Good times.
