I might’ve accidentally just mixed two cleaning products.

I didn’t realise that the cleaner had been and potentially put [Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner](https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/harpic-power-plus-toilet-cleaner–original-750ml) down the sink. About an hour later I put [Mr Muscle Drain Gel](https://www.mrmuscleclean.com/en-gb/products/drain/mr-muscle-max-gel-unblocker) down there.

It’s unclear online whether this is a dodgy combination or not?

Edit: Viakal may also have gone down the sink as well!

  1. Not much help. But I once finished a bottle of bleach, then topped up with Harpic (because I’m an idiot). Instant acrid fumes immediately came out, so I lobbed the lid down, opened the window and flushed while holding my breath. So in my experience, if it’s like your lungs are on fire that’s a bad sign.

  2. I just checked the ingredients for these products. What you just did was _very_ dodgy indeed.

Mr Muscle Drain Gel is a chlorine bleach-based cleaner with sodium hypochlorite.

Harpic Power Plus is a hydrochloric acid based cleaner.

_Never_ mix acids with bleach. That “cleaner smell” was probably chlorine gas. Chlorine gas, aside from being nasty on its own, turns into back into hydrochloric acid when it reacts with the moisture in your airways.

Since you’re not complaining of burning lungs, you were probably just lucky they were dilute enough to not produce too much of a reaction.

  3. I’ve just done a quick google of the active ingredients and if there are correct the Harpic is mostly a strong acid (HCl) and the mr muscle is a strong base (NaOH and NaOCl). So they will react and make chlorine gas. Open any windows, don’t huff it and dilute with water.

As you seem ok, I think you’ve got away with it but don’t do it again!

It’s dodgy. Google the products used along with the word “COSHH” to find the safety data sheets, then google the active ingredients to see if they mix.

As others have said, the chemicals you’ve used make chlorine gas when combined. Ventilate the area, seek medical advice if you or anyone in your household have *any* symptoms (e.g. itchy eyes/sore throat/headache/etc) and don’t do it again, you nugget.

  5. You’d probably have died already from toxic fumes, but hells bells, be really careful. I nearly killed myself because I mistakenly bought a toilet cleaner which came in a bottle almost identical to a bleach bottle.Nearly mixed the two while cleaning, woulda been hello chlorine gas, goodnight me.
