If I’m in a boots or superdrug type shop and looking for say a lipstick and the shade I want isn’t on the shelf I always look in the drawers below the shelves. They’re unlocked and easy to access and I thought this was the done thing. I did this while shopping with my friend the other day and they were horrified and thought it wasn’t ‘allowed’ as the drawers are only for the people that work in the shops to access. Are we meant to open those drawers?

  1. It’s not something I’d give much thought to. Then again, as a man, I don’t tend to buy lipstick or other beauty products.

But, logically speaking, if it wasn’t for customers to access, you’d figure there’d be notices stating such a thing and these drawers would be locked.

I’m sure stores would much prefer the sale resulting from you going into the drawer for a non-shelved product rather than you walking away empty handed.

  2. I open them to see if the item I want is in stock. Don’t really see the issue. If the staff don’t have time to replenish the shelves I can’t imagine they’ve got time to get into a debate with me about it.

  3. If you can’t see it on display, my view would be that it’s in a place for only the staff to access.

If they had unopened cardboard boxes of supplies waiting to go on the shelves, would you take a box cutter and open them up?

  4. You’re definitely not supposed to, but I do. I used to work on a makeup counter in boots and other people in the team were terrible at restocking the shelves. There was always stock in the drawers that hadn’t been put on the shelves when I started my shift for the day. So I always have a sneaky check of the drawers if something I want isn’t in stock on the shelves. Often it is! I think the floor staff don’t always have enough time to get around to restocking the shelves.

  5. Only time I’ve done this is when the bananas on the shelves look a bit too battered so I look in the drawers where they keep tomorrow’s stock and grab some green ones. I’m rarely the first to have done it either.
