Yes, they are trying to start a conversation. I usually follow up asking if they have any plans after work or what they like to do. I’m mostly just curious and friendly. There are a few co workers that I spend time with outside of work because we have the same hobbies and interests. Or they want to share their interests with someone new.
But all of that starts from simple questions like “when are you here until?”
That or they are just being friendly.
Like the other guy said they’re just making small talk, if they’re your manager though lie your way out of there.
Other than that yeah, , always ask what people are doing on the weekends , they may be going places where you could meet a lot of interesting people , so be nice and try to be universally liked enough to at least be invited to tag along to places.
You don’t have to be madly in love with that coworker.
They’re either making small talk or mentally planning the shift out in their head
