Best friend doesn’t want me to date her best friend

Hi all,

A messy situation this one. I’ve taken interest in my close friend’s guy best friend and I’m p sure he’s interested in me too. The thing is my close friend doesn’t want me to date him even though he clearly stated to her he’s not interested in any kind of relationship. It brings her deep sadness that he won’t see her that way and she’s struggled for awhile now to move on. Bc of her wishes, I’ve always been cautious with him and made sure to not be flirty and what not as I see this as being a “loyal friend” but the more time goes on the more I feel like I’m just being controlled. Would it be selfish of me to ignore my friend’s wishes and pursue him? I’ve been friends with her for about 4 years now and I care about her a lot but I can’t help feel some type of way for her best friend. From my perspective I don’t see them getting together anytime soon and so why should she stop me from dating him. Like idek if we’ll work out. If we date and we’re not compatible then that’s the end of it. What would you do in this situation?
