Hey guys, I’ve got some extra time with my kids this summer and want to introduce some of the good ole classic films from the 80s, 90s and on, mostly so they can understand my jokes.

I’ve got 4 boys aged 11, 10, 9, and 4. I already have been doing this basically throughout their lifetimes, but I want to revisit a few and also source out your thoughts in case I missed any good ones.

I’m heading into work so forgive me if I don’t respond. I’ll be compiling a list from the comment section tonight.

Thanks for your input and for being an excellent community in general.

  1. Probably
    -Full House
    -Batman (original animated series)
    -Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade
    -Powerrangers
    -Superman
    -Bear in the big blue house
    -all Disney stuff series (aladin, chip’s dale: rescue rangers)
    -The real ghostbusters

    If they like to read (or getting read to) the „Classics to go to“ like treasure island and so on.

  2. Things from the 80s my kids have loved:

    * The Mysterious Cities of Gold
    * Back to the Future
    * Ghostbusters (1984)
    * Raiders of the Lost Ark
    * The A Team
    * Magnum PI
    * M*A*S*H

    I’m going to try them on Tales of the Gold Monkey this summer.

  3. LOTR, Star Wars 4-6, Spider-Man 1-3, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter

  4. * star wars
    * shrek (I couldn’t not write shrek but the other disney/pixar animation movies I’m going to guess you watched already)
    * tom and jerry
    * spiderman 1-3, the 3 marvel ones too, and into the spiderverse, I think all animated series are good, watch one or 2 with them
    * old superman movies, they aren’t great by today’s standards but they are classics
    * terminator
    * alien (it might be too scary for all, at least for the small one)
    * predator (it might be too scary)
    * lord of the rings
    * atlantis
    * rambo (it might be too scary)
    * rocky
    * pokemon
    * one piece
    * spongebob
    * loony toons
    * idk what mickey mouse shows exist but some of those

  5. Revenge of the nerds, weird science, vacation, aliens, married with children, goonies, breakfast club, Neverending story

  6. Stargate SG-1,
    matrix (imo one of the most influential movies of all time),
    The Nanny

  7. Road house is great.

    At least one traumatizing horror movie. Halloween, Scream, etc. something to keep em up at night for a bit. Teach them movies are just movies.

    Rush hour was a good end of 90’s film.

  8. at that age i would go with the following for the 1980s. No choices with adult themes included other than maybe Raiders

    – Raiders of the Lost Ark
    – ET
    – The Goonies
    – The Little Mermaid
    – Who Framed Roger Rabbit
    – Tim Burtons Batman
    – Willow
    – The Lost Boys
    – Ghostbusters
    – Back to the Future
    – Big
    – Star Wars Trilogy of course
    – Raising Arizona
    – Rocky movies

  9. If you have them watch Star Wars, just make sure you follow it up with Spaceballs.

    Spaceballs will forever and always make me think of my dad.

  10. Princes Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Mr. Bean, The Spielberg classics, LOTR and Akira.

  11. It’s not a film, but it’s a culture you need to provide them : Malcolm in the middle

  12. The holy trinity of action sci-fi franchises: Aliens, Predator, Terminator. Those were among my first R-rated movies.

    Adult enough that they’ll be thrilled you let them watch, tame enough (by today’s standards) that you won’t leave permanent scars. Just add the usual disclaimers: don’t repeat the bad language, movie violence isn’t real, etc.

  13. depends on your jokes, some of them are just cultural osmosis at this point, but if you want them to understand your jokes highly target the films you mainly quote.

  14. Rocky series taught me not to give up, no matter how bad it gets…

  15. LOTR, Goonies, Star Wars 4-6 (may want to start with 1-3), Indiana Jones, Rain Man, Hamlet (1996), & Gattaca.

    Potentially not suitable for the young audience but worth mentioning: Full Metal Jacket, Schindler’s List, & Big Lebowski.

  16. I’m going to aim the list more at your kids but hopefully some gems pop up.

    Some of the old comedies from Robin Williams and Jim Carrey:

    Flubber, Liar Liar, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Mask, Jumanji. Especially for younger kids, the physical comedy of these two is great.

    Others could be:

    The Mighty Ducks, The Goofy Movie, Footloose, Home Alone, Honey, I shrunk the kids, The Sandlot, Bad News Bears, Space Jam, Land Before Time, Angels in the Outfield, The Fox and the Hound
