I’ve (M28) been dating a girl (27) for 3 months and we’ve been having sex about once per week. In my prior relationships the girls I’ve been with have never been on any birth control and so I’ve always used a condom. The girl I’m dating now says she’s on the birth control pill, and I trust that she’s being truthful. She and I both take that to mean that cumming inside her is relatively low risk especially as she’s tracking her cycle. However, when this came up in conversation with my friend, he and his girlfriend were shocked to hear that we were being so reckless. Is this behavior really that risky?

  1. Yes it is. Many unintended pregnancies have resulted from a woman’s cycle being wonky, even when she thinks she knows exactly when she is going to ovulate. Birth control pills can fail for one of several reasons. Is the combination of the two safer than one of them alone, yes, but I wouldn’t take the chance if I were you. All it takes is the birth control pill failing due to a medication that interacts with it and her ovulation not happening according to plan, and you have a mighty big problem on your hands.

  2. I have a 40 year old daughter. My wife was on BC. It’s not 100%. Unless your ready for fatherhood keep the condoms. Or get snipped. That’s 100%.

  3. My ex and her sister were talking about her sister secretly going off Birth control.

  4. Pregnancy risk: BC isn’t perfect. If she got pregnant, what would the consequences be? Have you discussed this possibility with her? Would she have an abortion? If not, would you be okay with having a child with her? If you want to quantify this risk, look up the failure rate for her BC and multiply it by the cost of raising a child.

Risk of STIs: Are you two exclusive? Do you know each other’s health statuses?

If you can confidently answer all of these questions, then you’ve done your due diligence and can make an informed decision about having unprotected sex. If not, then you might want to ask yourself why you’re unnecessarily engaging in risky behavior.
