My family has a bad history of alcohol abuse and for my job I am unable and unwilling to do illegal drugs

  1. Believe or not, running. When I used to run every day it was common for me to experience a kind of high after a while.

But if it were me I would just get some weed gummies and have a great day. They are legal in a lot states these days.

  2. I just gave a man a really long relaxing massage in the shower and he said he felt drunk and like his head was floating

  3. Your family history is with addiction and self destructive behavior, not alcohol specifically. You won’t escape that history simply by avoiding a specific substance. You’ll just find some other thing to abuse and self destruct with, which is exactly what this question is about.

I suggest you seek therapy now BEFORE you find your drug of choice. Before you find your rock bottom.

  4. Adrenaline (looking off a cliff, surfing, snowboarding, skydiving, mma) emotional (looking inward-weakness/strength “know thyself”, relationships) or intellectual development (anything that grabs your interest, explore it and it will expand beyond your expectations or imagination) , go jog/swim for at least an hour (you can push longer safely with a mobile re-hydration), build something exquisite, go out in the middle of nowhere and camp outside directly under the stars (away from light pollution and preferably away from predators -desert is good) , start planning bigger goals (vacation, finances, school funds, side hustles) with a clear executable path.

  5. I think exercise and sex are the best non-drug highs. To get an exercise high, you have to do pretty intense exercise (e.g. I’m very fit and don’t get an exercise high unless I do sprint-like exercise for extended periods of time; but then, the full-body euphoria is excellent. 10/10). If you don’t have someone to have sex with, masturbating is a good substitute; try edging and toys.

  6. get yourself cold as fuck somehow then hop in a hot bath/ hot tub, will feel almost like being drunk

  7. Long term: Esteemable acts. Accomplish something worth accomplishing. Volunteer with disabled kids, build a home for a family in need.

    Short term: Sex

  8. RUNNING. Even if it had zero physical health benefits I’d do it. It took me a few months to be able to comfortably run long enough to get the high, but literally nothing has changed my mood like starting my morning with >30 min runs. If I have a social event or date I wanna be a lil loosey goosey and social for, I’ll throw in a run as close to the event as possible.

It helps me stay calm better than benzos, be social better than alcohol, be alert better than caffeine, be chill on the couch better than weed, and sleep better than Benadryl.

If you could put it in a pill it would be the most popular drug on earth.

Second place far beneath running but far above any drug I’ve found would be sauna & cold plunge.

I’m about to go out to the bars, I just finished a 45 minute run and am about to shower. I will have no more than 2 beers all night and will have a great time. If I skipped the run, I’d have a decent time but would feel like I need an extra drink or 2 for social mode to kick in.

  9. Skydiving. Your blood will be coursing with all sorts of fun natural chemicals for an hour afterwards.

  10. Meditation, vibing to music, pushing your body past its physical limits, skydiving, bungie jumping, being in love and being loved.

There’s lots of highs that life gives you.

  11. Strenuous exercise, sex, sports / martial arts, winning/succeeding at something, getting money.

  12. If your family has a history of abuse, I would just try the sober train mane. Weed isn’t a long term answer to happiness. Trust me on that one. Exercise, diet, and cut out processed things. Learn to enjoy the little things. Good luck man!

  13. Eating extremely spicy food. You get a high that’s very similar to a runner’s high.

  14. Okay, people often get way off base here.

It’s better to look in a different direction other than feeling euphoric- chase satisfaction instead, because that is sustainable. Doing a great job, taking care of your household, being responsible financially. Satisfaction is resilient and can sustain you.

You cannot sustain euphoria no matter what, it’s always chasing the dragon.

I chase satisfaction every day and let euphoria find me. Euphoria finds me after a killer workout, when I really nail a song I play, when I am at an amazing concert, when I’m having great sex.

But don’t try to chase those things as Plan A. You’ll be permanently disappointed.

  15. When I was a kid I used to love spinning around on the spot and then stop . I felt all dizzy and loopy in a fun way. Then as a teen I tried weed and booze and I thought they were a shittier way to get half the same buzz I could get for free.

    so yeah try that.

  16. Speed. Like in a car or on a bike. Not the nose snorty kind. Oh my god – the excitement of lining up at a drag strip or getting belted into a race car. Giving it your all around a track – perfect shifts – going to mid 100s and then back to almost nothing for a hairpin – smelling your brakes – oof. It’s just amazing.

Same thing for almost any high performance sporty stuff. I know people who ski and get the same tingle. Or dive. Etc.
