So I always try to be friendly, but social interaction often feels like a puzzle I only have half the pieces to. So a few days ago I decided to try being a bit more silly and joking than my usual reserved self. It mostly went ok, but..

I was walking out of the building I work at and closed the door behind me, not realizing that there was a small group of people who were about to go in. In my sleep deprived state I decided to make a joke about it and said “your not welcome here” like I was some guardian of the gates the joke didn’t land (obviously) and I walked away embarrassed.

Afterward I realized what I did. I just closed a door on people and told them they weren’t welcome here, and then realized I just did a racism because they were black.
I told a group of black teens I WORK WITH you aren’t welcome here, and closed a door on them. On accident! How do you be such a racist asshole on accident!?!

I just don’t know what to do now, I have tried to apologize but I don’t remember all of their faces, and anytime I have recognized and approach one of them I get ignored. Should I just quit and find a new job at this point?

  1. LOLLLL THIS IS SOMETHING I WOULD DO
i wouldn’t worry too much about it— if you see them you could apologize but they probably aren’t thinking about it tbh

  2. THIS IS CRAZY, BUT YOU’RE LOVED DON’T WORRY –

Literally, you can just come to them and apologize like “OH MY GOSH I WAS HAVING A SHOWER THOUGHT AND REALIZED ME TRYING TO MAKE A NERDY JOKE THE OTHER DAY ENDED UP POTENTIALLY DISCRIMINATORY. I AM SO SORRY, I GENUINELY HATE THAT I COULD HAVE DONE SUCH A THING!”

Like, I don’t know .. This is chaotic, and the fact that it isn’t even something you would’ve known until you realized it is like so cringe I’m so sorry for everyone involved like jgxitzurdoyvhfitdouvulv
