I’m not a pro either but it helps when you think about some general ongoing topics that both/all of you can participate in (classes, weather, politics, parties, other interests).
Other strategy is to rely on asking questions. Let the other side talk – when talking about bigger topics ask some smaller questions (since when they are interested in that hobby, how much time it takes to learn it etc)
One thing to realize is that the PURPOSE of small talk is simply to find a topic you can connect on with the other person. Once you find that topic, the conversation becomes fun!
