In order to continue in my building apprenticeship I need to complete the customer service standard. The problem with this is that I don’t actually no how. What I’m being asked to do is make conversation with builders and delivery drivers as the come in the door while I’m having my break. And while I do my best to be friendly to people when I’m alone, doing so when I’m not alone is significantly more challenging for a few reasons.

I actively avoid talking to people unless I’m genuinely interested in them which is a huge blockage in completing customer service skills. But also, I’m half the age of everyone I work with and the customers which makes it harder for me because there’s no reason for customers to talk to me beyond asking me directions to someone that frequently helps them. Also the person I spend my breaks with is always quick to make small talk with everyone that comes in the, leaving little room for a timid person like myself to say anything.

Any suggestions help.
