So I have a sainsburys, tesco, aldi, lidl, morisons, asda and a heron foods near to me. What foods do you buy from those shops that are specific only to those shops or do you buy from those shops because of better quality.
I buy bread rolls from morrisons because they taste better than anything at aldi (minus the metro rolls but they are high in calories)
Thanks

  1. I can’t buy chicken from Tesco or Morrisons, has to be Asda. I’ve always had bad chicken from Tesco and Morrisons – always happens to be too veiny, the fatty or having a weird taste to it, yet I’ve never had a bad chicken from Asda. Maybe it’s all psychological I don’t know but yeah when I need chicken I always buy it from Asda. I honestly don’t rate Aldi and Lidl and Sainsbury’s is a little out of my price range… although the way things are going I have found myself visiting Morrisons less and less as their prices have shot right up!

  2. We do most of our shopping at Aldi and sometimes Asda or Lidl. Specific items we almost always get from Aldi:

    – brioche rolls

    – pain au chocolat

    – cereals

    – their “luxury” fruit gummy sweets (my kids and I are addicted…)

From Lidl we tend to get garlic sausage and the kielbasa sticks.

Our Asda has pak choi and chinese cabbage which the other shops don’t.

  3. M&S have a range of Buttermilk and Southern Fried Chicken.

None of the other supermarkets have a similar product of equal quality.

  4. Iceland – frozen Greggs sausage rolls.

Also that lasagne inside a Yorkshire pudding ready meal.

  5. I love the fresh donuts from the morrisons bakery, especially the chocolate orange filled ones.

  6. Sainsbury’s – McGuigan Estate Sauvignon Blanc

It’s my favourite cheap wine and I can’t find anywhere else that sells it. £5.50 a bottle, lovely.

  7. I do 90% of my shopping in Lidl and Aldi, but have to do the occasional morrisons shop to get Yorkshire Tea Gold.

  8. We buy almost everything from Lidl. We live right next to one, so it’s convenient but for me, I think there’s also a feeling of comfort in it – I grew up in a village in Germany and the supermarket we had was a Lidl (and my mother still works at Lidl). So many things feel more familiar to me because of this (although they’re getting rid of more and more of my beloved foods).

I will not buy meat anywhere else than Lidl. Don’t really know why. Maybe because the one time we got one from Sainsbury’s it was off?

I could probably list my whole shop but we never buy chips/fries anywhere else. We always get the skin on fries from lidl – we like them better than even the name-brand stuff.

Absolutely love their ice creams, so lovely, and so cheap compared to the name-brand items elsewhere. Genuinely prefer theirs to Cornetto, etc.

  9. We’ve only got an Aldi and Morrisons where I live, get most of our shopping from Aldi but I have to get Morrisons own brand cherry and berry squash, havent found any as nice as that one.

  10. Tesco do red wine stock pots that nowhere else does. I pick some up every time I go past one as there isn’t one close to me.

  11. Ugh, gluten free shopping is like this. English mustard contains wheat in most supermarkets, except Waitrose and M&S so that’s where I buy mustard. M&S and Waitrose are also very good for pickled condiments. Waitrose freezer section has Sues Kitchen ready made shortcrust pastry (the only GF one I’ve found) and GF egg custards.

Morrisons freezer section is very good so that’s where I buy GF frozen pizza. They do a nice macaroni and cheese with real cheese, the other shops sell the Kirstys vegan one which isn’t as nice.

Asda sell frozen mini sugar doughnuts that taste almost like real ones when you air fry them. Asda also sell Granovita paste that I can’t find anywhere else (I buy it online otherwise). They’ve got some Schar bits you can’t get in the others (cookies).

Coeliacs can’t have Bovril but apparently Morrisons Beefy is safe – I haven’t managed to go and check yet! Tesco used to do Beefy but I haven’t seen it.

Holland and Barrett sell Abakus seaweed crisps. Our closest Morrisons sold seaweed snacks for a bit, but they’ve discontinued them now.

We get meat from Lidl or Sainsburys because Tesco’s is pretty poor. Tesco veg is also awful at the moment so I prefer M&S or Morrisons.

  12. Heron foods is great because they have such random items with great deals so I always go there to find snacks when I’m nearby.

I do most of my shopping at asda because I have it delivered. They have a nice selection of Polish, eastern European and halal foods which are stuff I buy regularly and it saves me having to go to different places for all those items.

  13. Heron foods is the only place i know where i can get a kilogram of bacon for £1.20, simply because they’re offcuts or mis-shapes.

  14. Nurishment cans; superb way to get something in your stomach if you’re ill or alcohol compromised. Like milkshake but with vitamins and most of the Periodic Table added as salts and minerals. Never seen it in a mainstream supermarket, only in independent local/ corner stores.

  15. Heron Foods has something called garlic good which is essentially a garlic butter but it’s perfect for making your own garlic bread, and I’ve never seen it in a big supermarket

  16. I don’t live near an Asda but I will trek my way to one to get my hands on their red pesto and ricotta pasta sauce.

  17. I’m so tired I read that as “Morrisons, Asda and heroin”

I will walk to our Aldi which is furthest away just to get their cheap imitation Crunchy Nut. And they do this cheese bake with chorizo which is unrivalled.

  18. I bought some metro rolls the other day and turned them into garlic cheese bread. Not healthy, but utterly delicious.

  19. -Waitrose: The fresh fish and butcher (+cheese) counter is simply smashing, offering a broad selection. Sometimes you can bag a proper bargain, like £3 for 1kg of fresh clams. Their sugar-free bitter lemon fizz is rather good too.

-M&S: they have a lovely range of their own-brand sauces, biscuits, and fresh bread from their in-store bakery, which, given the current inflation, isn’t too pricey.

-Amazon has some good deals, particularly on the larger bottles.

  20. The Morrison’s crinkle cut gherkins are the only edible gherkins in the country outside of Polish shops and imports.

  21. Grapes. M and S. Nothing else is remotely close.

Most fruit is a lot better but the grapes are genuinely like a different fruit.

  22. If I’m getting pasta sauces or pesto then M&S, they tend to use olive oil over the cheaper oils and the taste is way better

  23. Morrisons do the best donuts by far, and their bakery sausage rolls are pretty top tier.

Tesco Cola-X Zero is pretty good too, wouldn’t buy any other own-brand Coke/Pepsi but the Tesco one hits the spot (and for about ,1/4 the price).

Lidl bakery items like the Brownies, Crossaints and cookies are brilliant. Can’t fault them.

  24. Asda used to do free from mini caterpillar cakes. There was terrible mini-caterpillar drought of about 6 months where I couldn’t get them anywhere as Asda discontinued them. They are now back available in Sainsbury’s!

  25. The gluten free ranges vary between different shops, so we get gf lasagne in m&s or sainsbury’s, instead of morrisons where we normally shop, for example. Sainsbury’s also has gf sausage rolls, pork pies and fishcakes.

  26. I try and get my fresh fruit from M&S. The quality is miles better for a relatively small increase in price. I get pretty much everything else from Lidl.

  27. ‘Carbonara of Dreams’ from M&S/Ocado. I love carbonara – This ready made sauce is the BEST I have ever tried, legitimate top quality Italian restaurant standard! it’s the only reason I use Ocado for online food shopping as I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else.

  28. Fresh fish from the docks at Milford Haven. Way better than anything from any supermarket, bigger fillets, cheaper and fresher. It’s a bit of a trek so we go about every 4 months with a cold box and freeze it. And no plastic packaging

  29. Morrisons for frozen steak bakes. And ‘Big Tom’ tomato juice.

Aldi for mayo and ketchup, and decent wine for under £7.

M&S for shortbread flavoured tea. I’m not usually one for flavoured teas but the M&S one has me converted.

Waitrose for sushi, if it’s a shop that makes it in-house.

I struggle to ever find anything I like in Tesco.

  30. Tescos have the best bananas. All the other supermarkets sell average bananas but I am pretty loyal to Tescos for this. Morrisons fruit (as a whole, not just bananas) are something I avoid.

  31. Dog bags + steak + fresh veg, Morrisons

Tinned mackeral + anti pasti/jars of lovelyness Sainsbury’s.

    Akash Rice Tesco.

    Boneless chickicken thighs, Iceland.

I get the rest from Aldi.

And olive oil I love greek olive oil it is So much better than italian. Aldi and Sainsbury’s have good ones.

  32. Asda do really nice vegan marshmallows that taste just like regular ones. Can’t seem to get them at any other supermarket.
