Hello!

I am a 28 year old female struggling with sexual dysfunction on Zoloft. I started Zoloft in May of this year for anxiety/OCD..however I’ve been medicated on some sort of anti depressant or anxiety for many years. The sexual side effects weren’t as much of a concern before, but I now have a partner who gets upset that I can’t climax with him. It is definitely frustrating so I get where he is coming from. I do believe my inability to “get there” is related to the Zoloft because even solo it takes me much longer and the orgasms are very weak. I saw my psych doctor today who said we had a few options-one of which being to add Wellbutrin 150mg XR which may help lessen the sexual side effects from Zoloft. Does anyone have experience with this? Please share any and all thoughts!
Another option was to switch to one of the newer meds (Viibryd?) but my anxiety and OCD feels so stable and I’m feeling so good on the Zoloft, I’m honestly scared to try coming off of it at this point.

  1. I take zoloft and wellbutrin. With wellbutrin, it has helped increase my sex drive.

  2. If your doctor is open to trying an alternative, then I say give it a try. But make sure you have frequent follow up appointments thereafter, and even keep a log if you have to in order to keep accurate track of any changes, good and bad.

It’s ok if you feel like a certain medication isn’t quite right. And I actually think switching is a decent idea considering there have been quite a few people who still saw the sexual side effects continue long after stopping the SSRI. I’m honestly not sure how the newer drugs affect sexual function like the classic drugs do. But I do know there are so many options out there, that as long as you are committed to persisting through the process of trial and error (which I know can be frustrating), you will find the right treatment

  3. My psychiatrist said that Wellbutrin doesn’t counteract the effects of SSRIs like Zoloft. Biochemically, that’s not how it works. Rather, when adding Wellbutrin, doctors reduce the dosage of the SSRI which lessens the impact of it.

Personally, I don’t think *adding* Wellbutrin will help with your anorgasmia. You need to *replace* your SSRI with something that doesn’t cause anorgasmia.
