My bf’s mother who is materialistic and obsessed with luxury brands bought him a Burberry trench coat back when he was temporarily a student there, saying that so many British people wear it. Is this true?
I said there’s no way, all that talk is just marketing. I find the coat so incredibly flashy. And in my opinion, Barbour coats seem a little more quintessentially British & more common? As well as North Face.
So what do British people actually wear? (And to be more specific, Londoners)

They wear more or less everything. One could wear any of those brands you mention and no-one would really think about it.
It is true that foreign tourists are the most avid customers of our luxury brands, ha.
EDIT: Oh! FWIW Burberry is made in my town! I have and wear a Burberry scarf, but it only a cost a fiver from the factory shop in the days they had one at the factory (five mins walk from where I live, it looks like Underworld from Corrie).
“So what do British people actually wear” you do realise this is a population of like 10 million people in London right? Fashion varies wildly
I see those Burberry coats fleetingly, not in abundance to say they’re incredibly popular, but Burberry is a staple choice amongst quite a few and probably always will be
It’s strange; I can’t really think of anything in particular we wear, yet tourists are often very obviously tourists from their fashion choices, so there must be something we are doing.
I have one. I picked it up really cheap, too.
Haven’t seen Burberry out in the wild in a long time. When I did it was always worn by chavs.
yes, it is worn a lot. Not in flashy colours. I have one in black.
Husband and I both wear Aquascutum trenches instead (both second hand, his vintage, mine from the last 10 years or so). There was a mini trend a few years ago, I think Burberry is too expensive
Yes, my partner has a burberry trench coat – [something like this](https://uk.burberry.com/long-waterloo-heritage-trench-coat-p80580331), but she obviously got hers second hand.
I live in in quite deprived city up north so the only time I really ever see Burberry is when chavs wear it and even then I don’t see it often
It’s hard to generalise but I’d guess you’re right that you’re more likely to see a Barbour jacket than a Burberry trench coat. They’re cheaper!
Looks like Inspector Gadget’s coat. Can’t say I’ve seen someone where one but I wouldn’t say it is unreasonable either.
I mean… my girlfriend has a Burberry trench. So, um, yes?
Yup. Burberry trenches arn’t really that flashy at all.
Only rarely see Burberrys on men in London, and when I do, it’s usually immediately obvious they’re tourists. When it rains, London men tend to wear [technical jackets](https://static.standard.co.uk/2023/01/10/08/9c9b23285464ffc09601bdc6bbc5f14bY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNjczNDI1NTY1-2.69581936.jpg) from outdoors shops rather than formal raincoats. It’s all part of the casualisation of dress.
Parkas yes, not sure about Burberry trench coats specifically
I’m in my 20s and all I see is people wearing north face coats.
Yes, if they like them and can afford them. I had a Brooks Brothers trench coat modelled after the Burberry original and it was lovely – if a little on the big side. I sold it when I stopped needing to dress fancy for work etc.
Maybe not burberry specifically just due to how expensive they are, but coats in that style definitely aren’t uncommon. The style is more popular for women than men though.
You’re more likely to see the barbour coat style if you’re out in the countryside, and more likely to see the burberry trench coat style in the city, fashion is hardly a homogenous thing though.
yes burberry trench coats that cost 1k- 2k are very popular during this cost of living crisis
Burberry coats are very popular with women who work in finance in London
No, you’re thinking of Japanese tourists taken in coaches to outlet malls
People about 100 years ago with money used to wear Burberry. Now it’s worn as fake by the lower classes known as chavs. One of those brands that just foreigners wear thinking it’s a quintessential English brand. It was but it isn’t anymore.
In me Burberry. In me Burberry. I’ll be lookin well cool in me Burberry
Got one and wear it often, bought it at Bicester village Burberry shop. Although in black so it’s not got the Burberry ‘tartan’ look.
North Face is American
