Hi,
Recently my girlfriend and I broke up after living together for 3 months so far on a 12 month lease (flat). I am planning on moving home next month and will be changing my official permanent residence to my parents house. I obviously still need to pay 50% of the rent due to the contract, however I am wondering if I still need to pay council tax if I tell the council I no longer will be living here, even if I still will be paying rent for another 9 months? She will still be living here till the end of the contract.
Thanks and I can provide more information if needed.

  1. No, you only pay council tax for the days you live in a property. Your ex can apply for a 25% discount if she’s staying as a single person.

  2. If contract says you’re responsible for any incoming bills , then yes, you will have to pay everything, council, electricity, gas for the rest of your term.

  3. Give notice on your tenancy. You might have to pay one or two months depending on the arrangement but you shouldn’t have to keep paying the whole year. Even if you have made an agreement with your ex to cover your half of the rent for the remainder of the contract you should get yourself removed from the tenancy if you’re not going to be living there, to avoid potential costs and liabilities that you won’t have control over. You don’t have to pay council tax from the date you are no longer resident. If there are utilities in your name you need to take meter readings when you move out and inform the providers that you are no longer resident.
