I’ve just left uni where I was able to increase my social skills drastically. (I did computer science and I’m a 22M).

I’m now capable of talking to just about anyone who talks back for at least a few minutes before I run out of things to say (and they seemingly do as well). I also quite enjoy meeting new people now.

However I have a slight problem. Of those acquaintances I make, only the STEM people seem to migrate to friends and of those, it’s mainly only Computer Science. I often go bouldering (cliche, I know) and I know a lot of people there but I wouldn’t consider myself close to any of them. Perhaps I’m picking the wrong topics or something…

I’m assuming a likely reason is that I’m just not speaking to that many people but it also really feels like I’m the one who knows everyone but only at a surface level. I’ve never really cracked the friendship formula I guess.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar and was able to break out of the cycle.

  1. It’s probably a personality thing. STEM people are somewhat stigmatized because they’re usually a certain type of way, and it’s not a personality type that matches with how the average person is and the average person’s interests.
