Over lunch, my coworker was sitting diagionally opposite me and talking to another coworker infront of him (who is beside me). I also have another coworker infront of me.

I chipped in on something they were discussing and he **raised his voice** and scolded vulgar in our local dialect at me, fingers pointing at me. If I were to translate that vulgar to English, it would mean “fk your mom”.

This absolutely came right out of nowhere and I felt this is him using an excuse to scold me vulgarities right infront of everybody.

Note: I am one corporate rank higher than the rest of the guys present at the lunch.

At this point, I am not very sure if he is secretly hating me or whatever reasons he has, but as far as I know, I have no bad history with him.

I did not react / was not able to react because the only way I will do this is to trade off vulgarities with him. I dont mind making a scene at the eating place but after discussing with my spouse after I reached home, she told me not to stoop to his level, something which I dont understand. Please help me here.

I wish to know how you would handle this situation.
