I’m an 18 year old male from a western country. My parents have always been very antisocial so we never had any guests coming over. I personally have only a few close friends and i usually avoid group hangouts and so do my friends. Up till i was 14 i never saw anyone do handshakes. Only when i started going to high school started seeing people do it and i never understood why and when to do it. Most people almost never came up to me to initiate a handshake, all the while shaking hands with almost everybody else. I was at a party once and there were like 20 people and i thought i wouldn’t go up to everybody and shake hands. And as other people arrived they all shook hands with everyone, I felt so awkward afterwards. So I’m super confused about this topic, and i know it’s unethical to avoid shaking hands but with my family and friends i never shake hands, and i find it strange to do it with acquaintances. I think im really immature and confused about handshakes. Could some of you help me with this stuff?
