Related to another thread I made here

Imagine this example:

"The sky is blue"

"But the grass is green"

Here "but" means "and". I personally find that a bit misleading but I've come to accept a lot of people use that word to mean "and".

The problem is, how can I know when someone doesn't mean a counter-argument when they say "but"?

In my example, a counter-argument doesn't make sense but I've definitely been in situations where it was ambiguous and the other party admitted it was (my point being it wasn't just me being confused).

So how can I know?
