I had unprotected oral sex with a man I am seeing and got a bad cold/sinus infection a week later. I went to get STI tested and all results came back negative but I was not checked for HSV/herpes. With the exception of a white spot on my tonsil that looks like it is pus (white blood cells) filled, i had no other sores etc. i just had major congestion and runny nose. Partner is defensive when i suggest i could have gotten it from oral sex on him.
I have done research online and the results suggest impossible to get cold or sinus inf from oral sex. Now, I am worried I contracted something else that presented as sinus infection. Yet, I do not know what to do to confirm what I got. Infection is now mostly cleared. What should I do? Test for HSV wont necessarily prove anything because it won't show age of infection.

Am i wrong/incorrect for thinking I got a cold from oral sex?

  1. Your own research shows you that you can’t catch a cold from oral sex. Cold symptoms are not symptoms of hsv.

Why are you determined that this is an sti from oral sex?

If you want to get tested for hsv, get tested for it.

  2. I really think you just had a sinus infection that you got so close to this time giving him oral that you are paranoid that is an STI. There are no STI’s that cause congestion and runny nose like that.

  3. Well, it looks like oral sex isn’t just good for your immune system but also for your communication skills! Maybe next time make sure to have a thorough discussion about STI testing before getting down and dirty. But hey, at least you know your partner is defensive about their sexual health, right? Better safe than sorry!
