What’s it like to slam dunk a basketball?

  1. It’s like shitting on a sunrise, downright glorious.

It feels powerful, especially when with the noise that rims make. In high school, we had breakaway rims, so when I dunked, the rim would bend down and then snap back, making a cool sound. The first dunked when I was about 14, but it was just barely getting the ball in. I really starting feeling the power behind it when I was able to cock back my arm in the air and slam the ball in.

When I learned more dunks, it felt even better. I peaked when I was around 18 and I was able to do a two-handed reverse dunk and was able to dunk by just jumping straight up.

On the other hand, it hurt my hand sometimes. I got a blister on my finger doing it too much, and the next time I dunked in practice, it got ripped open and started bleeding. Another time, I dunked in an away game, when I was used to breakaway rims. When I dunked it hard, the rim didn’t give like I was used to, and I hurt my back a little.

If I missed, I also felt is tired . When I was tried to dunk in a game for the first time and missed (ball came out), as I was running back to defense I felt my energy fall pretty far. This was probably due to the adrenaline rush going away.

Lastly, I never really got comfortable dunking with people guarding me. When ever I begin to get in the air, I just keep thinking “I swear to God, now’s not the time for a stupid foul,” I was playing a pick up game in high school and I got a break away dunk opportunity. Except, a person running after me decided to foul me from behind when I was already in the air. It’s no fun being knocked off balance like that.

Tip dunks are a whole nother story. It’s really hard to do it when you’re the biggest guy because some stout asshole is going to be boxing you out like an old man and you can’t get anywhere near the rim, but when you do, it’s amazing.

Posters are few and rare, and I’ve only done it five or six times.

  2. No fucking Idea im 5’8 and white. I cant jump for shit unless its off a roof.

  3. It’s awesome as long as you don’t miss. Nothing looks sillier than trying to do a 360 dunk and missing the hoop entirely.

  4. For a short period of time in my early 20s, I could baaaarely dunk a basketball. I’m 5’11 and white.. and at the time I was in pretty great shape.. but, I still couldn’t do it in a game. I would need to get a big running start and not dribble and I could juuuust barely do it.

It felt awesome.. hanging on the rim afterwards, feeling like you’re 1,000 feet in the air. I can’t even imagine how awesome it would feel in an actual game.

  5. Just to be clear i was never able to do any of those fancy dunks that pros do, but it was nothing special.

  6. I could do it as a sophomore in HS. Only one kid on varsity could. Going up and wrapping your wrist around the rim…awesome. I never dunked on anyone, but could still do it.
