Is it awkward to bring up relationships in a initial convo

I recently had a short smoke up sesh with my PG mate and while talking I bought up the hookup scene in mumbai and while he’s been in bangalore started talking about the scene there. We have a had one sesh before this and had a good conversation, though we don’t get to talk a lot apart from some small talk due to our work schedules. I bought up my relationships and mentioned a few casual one I’ve had and then asked him about his relationships and if he had any casuals. There was a sudden moment of silence but he answered in a good way. I just want to know, is it bad to ask someone about their relationship(s), given the fact that it’s just your second proper conversation with the person? And what is the proper approach?
