Do things passionately. Unironically, start acting like you are interesting. As someone who dealt with depression for a long time, mine came from straight boredom. My days blended together. Nothing mattered. Living or dyi*g didn't make a difference because I was in the same void all day.

So I started doing things. I went down every single aisle in the grocery store, because I could. I treated every single discussion board like I was a lawyer, because I could. I became a camp counselor and lived out in the woods for 3 months, because I could. I learned how to juggle, because I could.

There is so much beauty in learning something new in the world. Boredom is very dangerous. It's terrifying and leads us to think that we have ZERO interests because we're not doing anything. It's going to take time to practice starting new things. It'll feel strange at first, and honestly, like a waste of your time.

But doing new things is a muscle. It has to be trained. You have to try. Start with trying inconsequential tasks/hobbies that have no bearing on your future. Don't start hobbies correlated to you academic or professional career, it can make you view those tasks as chores and will defeat the novelty of starting a new task.

I suggest an arts and crafts or physical activity in relation to a positive hobby you had as a kid or even something you wanted to learn as a child but was never given the opportunity to do so. I started doing dance lessons on YouTube because I was forced "to choose" softball over dance, even though I've always been a dancer.

Do the thing badly. Do it so badly that you think "holy hell, this is bad." And then keep going because you're learning how to do something for the first time. You probably aren't a virtuoso. You will need time, practice, and mistakes to get better. Teaching your brain that it can make mistakes and still get better will help your brain deal with the depression.

Here are some ideas!

  1. Juggling

  2. Paper Mache Masks and Painting

  3. Clay building

  4. Double Dutch

  5. Baking

  6. Knitting

  7. Make a Solar System Model

  8. Paint a picture you think your pet would like

  9. Ride a scooter/bike through your neighborhood

  10. Count how many red doors are in your neighborhood

  11. Build a Pizza at home

  12. Frisbee

  13. Dance Lessons

If anyone has any random skills they have, share them! The more random the task/skill is, the better.

You have to do things passionately if your brain is going to believe that you're happy. Invest in your happiness and give yourself a chance.
