I hear every election cycle about voter rolls being purged, often for political advantage. But why are they purged?

In Australia, we (usually) register when we're 18 and that registration lasts for our entire lives. There is never any voter roll purges, and the idea would be quite ludicrous here.

So why are they purged in the US? What harm is there in keeping people on the roll, even if they haven't voted in a long time?

Edit: Of course we 'purge' voter rolls by removing people who have died. I'm talking about purging people who are still alive. Didn't think I needed to clarify that…
