Making guy friends

I don't have much social experience so I am not really sure as to what's normal or not. Recently a guy started befriending me, and he is seeing someone already. We just talk about games together, never anything weird. I am a woman. I don't have much experience with guy friends as my friends are almost all women, but I'm becoming open to making friends with guys too, as long as they don't have other intentions with me. Is it normal for a guy who is taken to be initiating conversations and texting me? Or, is it normal in the first place for a guy and a girl to hang out as 100% just friends?
