How do I make friends with my coworkers at a new job

Basically the title, I've had a few jobs and have never really been friends or even talked that much with my coworkers. I kinda want to challenge myself to become friends with my coworkers at my new job though. So how do I do it, when Is it appropriate to initiate a conversation, what do I talk about etc.
