When I started my first year of uni last semester, there were big orientation and welcome days for my uni which allowed me to make friends with people in my very small and specific course.

This coming semester, I’ve changed courses and am moving to another university, and because it’s the middle of the academic year, there aren’t any welcome days so I’m relying on making friends in class. I’ve never been good at making friends and have pretty bad social anxiety so how should I go about approaching and talking to people and finding friends I can feel comfortable with?

  1. What helped me:
-Smile, even if they don’t smile back!
    -Eye Contact
    -Be positive and polite(no complaining)
-Make sure your appearance is neat and presentable.
These helped me attract extroverts who adopted me into their group and my social life grew from there.

  2. Find people who have things in common with you, whether that’s just having the same classes or having similar hobbies. Talk to people 1 on 1, get to know them, then if you get along you can go from there and get into their friendship group.
