There’s a girl on this season of Love Island UK who says she works in a “VIP medical lounge as a hostess serving beverages and stuff”

For the life of me I cannot figure out what this job is. I know our medical systems are very different (I’m American) but surely the NHS doesn’t have a VIP lounge like an airport?

The only thing I can think of is this like plastic surgery recovery center or something? What am I missing?

  1. As the leading UK “ask” subreddit, we welcome questions from all users and countries; sometimes people who ask questions might not appreciate or understand the nuance of British life or culture, and as a result some questions can come across in a different way than intended.

We understand that when faced with these questions, our users may take the opportunity to demonstrate their wit, dry humour, and saracasm – unfortunately, this also tends to go over the heads of misunderstood question-askers and can make our subreddit seem hostile to users from other countries who are often just curious about our land.

  2. I think you are right, my guess would be some sort of cosmetic surgery type place.

  3. Don’t often hear VIP used.

Could be either a private medical facility (e.g. Cromwell), or a cosmetics clinic (e.g. Cavendish).

There are also medical concierge services, who may well have some waiting facilities they refer to as VIP lounges.

As to your original suggestion of NHS sites with VIP lounges – many do, actually. There are NHS hospitals with private medical facilities, e.g. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Some of these facilities are hotel-like, food will often be better, rooms will be en-suite, and the visitor facilities will be nicer. Sometimes only some of those will apply.

  4. It’ll be a private clinic that offers cosmetic surgeries, so rich people want to go and sit in a “VIP” lounge after getting their weekly botox treatment. She’s basically a waitress but trying to make it sound more fancy.

There are thousands of private medical clinics in the UK.
